A captivating city full of antiquity, monuments, majestic bridges, and vintage streetcars

Why Lisbon?

Lisbon is a captivating city full of antiquity, monuments, majestic bridges, and vintage streetcars. And these are just a few of the reasons that make it an extremely interesting city to stay in during your Erasmus+ placement.

It is one of Europe's sunniest capitals and the most idyllic months are May to August when the city's sun-kissed sands are at their postcard-perfect ideal. Vintage trolleys tremble up and down its hills, bird-stained statues anoint impressive squares, taxis rattle, and screech through cobbled lanes as locals sit in street cafes watching the world go by. The LX factory and district oozes with art, creativity, and culture, while the Alfama area is steeped in history with cobbled streets that date back to before the 8th century. The Pombaline Baixa neighbourhood is also one of the most traditional areas for shopping and few stores are almost three centuries old.

Life in Lisbon

For Erasmus+ students, Lisbon’s diverse economy offers excellent work experience and employment opportunities in areas such as digital, textile, footwear, leather, furniture, and ceramics. Just about everything is affordable: from accommodation to groceries and eating out. The city has comprehensive local transport and offers easy access to other fantastic Portuguese cities, including Fátima, Sesimbra, Óbidos, and Porto.

With significant amounts of money being spent on improving the already charming city, the facilities and city of Lisbon are in the midst of a renaissance, all while the cost of living there remains low in comparison to almost all other European capital cities. Lisbon is big enough to have all the big city amenities, but still small enough to offer a great sense of community for Erasmus+ students.
